What a video compressor does

A video compressor makes a video file smaller, so it is quicker to send, upload and store. Phone cameras record at very high bitrates, so a one-minute clip can easily pass 100 MB. Most of that data is detail you will never notice on a phone screen or in a chat window. Compression re-encodes the video more efficiently: it keeps the picture you see and drops the data you don’t.

EZ Video Compressor does this on your own device. Add a video, choose how small you want it, and download the result as an MP4. There is nothing to install and no account to make.

A free online video compressor with no upload

Most online video compressors upload your file to a server, compress it there, and make you download it again. That means waiting for the upload, sometimes waiting in a queue, and trusting someone else’s server with your footage. Free plans often add a size limit, a daily limit or a watermark to push you towards paying.

This free video compressor works differently. The page loads once, and then your browser does the work with the video encoder built into your device, using its graphics hardware where it can. Your video never leaves your computer or phone, which makes it a good fit for family clips, work recordings and anything you would rather keep to yourself. There is no watermark and no sign-up, and we don’t cap the file size. Your device’s memory is the only limit.

It is free for real, too, with no paid plan and no trial. Your own device does the compressing, so there is no server bill per video for us to pass on to you.

A video compressor for Discord

Discord limits how big a file you can send without Nitro. Since August 2026 the free limit is 20 MB per file. Before that it was 10 MB, and for years it was 8 MB, which is why so many guides still talk about an 8MB video compressor. When a clip is too big, Discord refuses it and suggests upgrading.

To use this as a Discord video compressor, choose “Hit a file size” and type the size you need. About 19 MB keeps you safely under the current free limit. Type 8 MB if you want a file that also fits older limits or a server’s own rules. The compressor works out the bitrate from the length of your video, and the result lands at or a little under the size you asked for.

The same approach works for any site with an upload cap, such as email attachments, forms, chat apps and course portals.

How to get the best result

Start with Balanced. It is fast and makes a big difference to the file size. Use Best quality for videos you want to keep, and Smallest file when size matters more than detail.

Screen recordings and talking-head videos shrink well at a lower frame rate, and if a clip doesn’t need sound, removing it saves a little more.

Before you download, check the preview and the new size. If it’s not small enough, go back and try a stronger setting. Your original file is never changed.

Formats and devices

You can add MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM files, which covers video from iPhones, Android phones, screen recorders, cameras and most downloads. The compressed file is always an MP4 with H.264 video, which plays almost everywhere: Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, Discord, WhatsApp and social media. If your device can make H.265 video, you will also see that option for even smaller files, though some players can’t open H.265. Older formats such as AVI, WMV and FLV are not supported yet.

The compressor uses WebCodecs, a feature of modern browsers, and works best in Chrome and Edge. If your browser can’t compress video, the page tells you so up front instead of failing halfway.

Video compressor FAQ

What is a video compressor?

A video compressor is a tool that makes video files smaller. It re-encodes the video more efficiently, so the file takes less space while looking much the same. EZ Video Compressor is a free one that runs in your web browser, with nothing to install.

What does a video compressor do?

It lowers the amount of data used for each second of video, and can also lower the resolution or frame rate. That turns a large file into a smaller one that is quicker to upload, send by email or chat, and store on your phone or computer.

What is the best free video compressor?

The best one is the one that gets your file small enough without spoiling it, and without catches. EZ Video Compressor is free, adds no watermark, needs no account, sets no size limit and never uploads your video, because it compresses on your own device. You can aim for an exact file size, which most free tools can’t do.

How do I use this video compressor, step by step?

1. Drop your video onto the box at the top of this page, paste it, or click "choose a file". 2. Pick a quality (Smallest file, Balanced or Best quality), or choose "Hit a file size" and type the size you need. 3. Click "Compress video" and wait for the progress bar to finish. 4. Check the preview and the new size, then download your smaller MP4.

How do I compress a video?

Open a video compressor such as this one, add your video, choose how small you want it, and save the result. Here you can pick a quality level or type a target size in MB. A short clip takes seconds and a long 4K video can take a few minutes, depending on your device.

Is this video compressor really free?

Yes. EZ Video Compressor is completely free, with no paid plan, no trial and no limit on how many videos you compress. Your own device does the work, so there is no server cost per video for us to pass on to you.

Is there a free video compressor with no watermark?

Yes, this one. EZ Video Compressor never adds a watermark or logo to your video, and you don’t need to sign up. The file you download is just your video, smaller.

Can I use this video compressor for Discord?

Yes. Choose "Hit a file size" and type a size just under your Discord upload limit, such as 19 MB for the 20 MB free limit, or 8 MB to fit older limits. The result lands at or a little under the size you typed, so Discord will accept it.

Does compressing a video reduce quality?

A little, but often not so you would notice. The Best quality setting is meant to look the same to most people while still saving space. Balanced suits sharing, and Smallest file saves the most but looks softer. The smaller you make a long video, the more detail it loses, so lowering the resolution often looks better than squeezing a large picture into a tiny file.
